Paul Ricoeur, Between Hermeneutic Phenomenology and Analytic Philosophy

This study examines the dynamics of Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics, which departs from a critique of the Husserlian evidence of consciousness and culminates in a phenomenology of “anteriority” (antériorité). Ricoeur distrusts the self-evidence that truth is given wholly to consciousness through intuition, and from the outset, he grafts phenomenology onto hermeneutics. Furthermore, through his encounter with analytic philosophy of language, he firmly articulates the strata of signification inscribed within sens, grounding them not in a ‘transcendental constituting subject’ but in the ‘empirical intersubjectivity’ of historical communities. However, linguistic theories such as structuralism and analytic philosophy alone cannot fully exhaust the primordial, pre-predicative realm of human experience sedimented within symbols. For Ricoeur, the symbolic realm is an existential horizon of the “beyond of meaning” (au-delà du sens) that transcends fixed semiotic systems and remains perpetually open to new interpretations. This semiotics-transcending horizon, which surpasses purely semantic explanations, justifies Ricoeur’s fidelity to phenomenology. Furthermore, by passing through metaphorical and narrative mediations, Ricoeur culminates this ‘anteriority’ of primordial experience not as a mere regression to the past, but as a ‘hermeneutics of the self’ and a ‘practical ethics of self and other’. Consequently, phenomenology here becomes a philosophy of primordial meaning that is never fully given to the subject, a philosophy of the endless priority that human experience holds over itself.
