The Reception of Phenomenological Perspective in Spiritual Theology – A Charles André Bernard’s Study of Spiritual Experience –

This study aims to clarify the relationship between theology and philosophy. It examines how theology appropriates and utilizes philosophy in the development of theological reflection. Spiritual theology, by positing Christian experience as its proper object of study, has actively embraced phenomenological perspectives and methodologies. To demonstrate this, the study specifically analyzes Charles André Bernard’s research on “spiritual experience.” The analysis is structured around three fundamental questions: What is experience for Bernard? How is the objective value of spiritual experience established? What constitutes Christian experience? In addressing these questions, phenomenological perspectives and elements become evident, revealing how spiritual theology has appropriated phenomenology. Bernard employs key phenomenological concepts – such as the intentionality of consciousness, the givenness of objective reality, and the structure of experience as constituted by passivity and the response of consciousness – to explain Christian experience. It can thus be concluded that phenomenology has not merely provided spiritual theology with a methodological tool, but has also furnished it with an epistemological foundation that makes the study of experience possible.
