보편 진리의 흔적 – 부베 『古今敬天鑑(고금경천감)』과 색은주의 –
Traces of Universal Truth – Joachim Bouvet’s Gujin Jingtian Jian (古今敬天鑑) and Figurism –
본 논문은 부베(Joachim Bouvet, 白晋, 1656–1730)의 저서 고금경천감(古今敬天鑑) 1173 라틴어 사본을 중심으로 색은주의(Figurism, 索隐派)의 사상적 의미와 해석학적 특징을 관조한다. 부베는 구약과 신약의 예형적 주해 전통을 중국 고전 해석에 적용하여 문자(字)⋅도상(圖)⋅수(數) 구조 속에 내재한 상징적 의미를 신학적으로 해석하고 보편적 진리를 중국 문화 속에서도 발견할 수 있다고 제시하였다. 고금경천감 은 유교 경전에 대한신학적 해석일 뿐 아니라 ‘전례논쟁(Chinese Rites Controversy, 礼仪之争)’이라는 역사적 상황 속에서 중서 문화 간 긴장을 조정하고자 한 사상적 시도로 이해될 수 있다. 그러나 부베의 색은주의 해석은 교회 내부와 후대 학계로부터 지나친 상징적 해석이라는 비판과 특히 단반향의 문화적 투영이라는 한계에 직면하여 논쟁의 대상이 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이러한 시도는 계시의보편성을 철학적⋅신학적 차원에서 해석함으로써 동서 사상 간대화의 가능성을 제시하였다는 점에서 재고찰의 의의를 지닌다고본다. 그러므로 본 연구는 부베 사유를 보편 진리 탐구라는 관점에서 고금경천감 의 해석학적 구조와 사상적 지평을 관조해 보고자 한다.
This article analyzes the intellectual significance and hermeneutical framework of Figurism through an examination of the Latin manuscript of Gu Jin Jing Tian Jian (古今敬天鑑) authored by Joachim Bouvet (白晋, 1656–1730). Bouvet utilized the typological interpretive tradition from the Old and New Testaments to analyze Chinese classical texts. He wanted to find hidden meanings in Chinese characters, number patterns, and old cultural traditions by doing this. Bouvet posited that these elements retained vestiges of a universal truth, discernible within the intellectual heritage of China. From this standpoint, Gu Jin Jing Tian Jian can be perceived not merely as a theological exegesis of Confucian classics, but also as an intellectual endeavor to address the cultural discord that arose between China and the West during the era of the Chinese Rites Controversy. Later, both church leaders and modern scholars criticized Bouvet’s figurist interpretations for using very symbolic readings of the Chinese classics. Nonetheless, his work retains historical significance as it endeavored to elucidate the universality of divine revelation at both philosophical and theological dimensions. This study reevaluates Bouvet’s ideas as an early effort to express the potential for dialogue between Eastern and Western intellectual traditions by reanalyzing the hermeneutical framework and intellectual milieu of Gu Jin Jing Tian Jian.
