The Mental Mechanisms of Adverbial Phrases and Existential Situations
– An Existential Psycho-Linguistic Analysis (EPLA) –

This study aims to examine the correlation between adverbial phrases and the psychic mechanisms operating within existential situations, from the perspective of Existential Psycho-Linguistic Analysis (EPLA). While traditional psychoanalytic linguistic research has focused on central structures such as signifiers and metaphors, this study reconceptualizes adverbial phrases—often deemed peripheral—as essential forms where the affective traces of the unconscious condense. Adverbial phrases function as psychic mechanisms that adjust a speaker’s attitude, emotional intensity, sense of responsibility, and relational distance. “Expressions such as “just,” “anyway,” “perhaps,” “somehow,” and “actually” serve to linguistically manifest psychological mechanisms within existential situations, including the deferral of decision, resignation, uncertainty, premonition, and self-effacement. This study categorizes these phrases into five types—avoidance/deferral, resignation/self-effacement, uncertainty/hedging, premonition/foreboding, and transition/contrast—and analyzes their connection to existential affective structures. Furthermore, by interpreting these phrases within the EPLA model—composed of ‘Affect-Situation-Utterance-Symptom-Void-Recovery’—this study reconstructs language not merely as a meaning-transmission system, but as an apparatus for regulating existential decision and suffering. Consequently, this study redefines the adverbial phrase as a linguistic form where the negativity of existence is most minutely condensed, offering a new analytical framework for linguistic practice in counseling, therapy, and thanatology.
