미적 경험으로서의 진로 구성 – 존 듀이 경험철학에 기반한 내러티브 진로상담 연구 –

– A Study of Narrative Career Counseling Based on John Dewey’s Philosophy of Experience –
본 연구는 진로를 경험의 구성 과정으로 재이해하고, 존 듀이(John Dewey)의 경험철학에 기반하여 내러티브 진로상담이 미적 경험의 형성 과정으로 작동함을 이론적으로 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 듀이는 예술을 인간과 환경 간의 교변작용(transaction) 속에서 형성되는 통합적 경험으로 이해하고, ‘하나의 경험(an experience)’ 개념을 통해 경험이 시작, 전개, 완결의 구조를 갖는 통일적 과정임을 강조하였다. 또한 그는 행함(doing)과 겪음(undergoing)의 순환적 구조를 통해 경험이 의미를 형성한다고 보았다. 본 연구는 이러한 개념을 바탕으로 진로를 경험의 흐름 속에서 형성되는 정체성의 과정으로 재개념화한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 교변작용의 관점에서 진로를 개인과 환경의 상호구성 과정으로 이해하고, ‘하나의 경험’ 개념을 바탕으로 단절된 경험의 통합 가능성을 탐색하였다. 또한 행함과 겪음의 순환적 구조를 통해 내담자의 생애 경험이 마이크로 내러티브에서 매크로 내러티브로 재구성되는 과정을 분석함으로써, 내러티브 진로상담의 작동 원리를 제시하였다. 나아가 듀이의 비평가 개념을 바탕으로 상담자의 역할을 재정의하고, 내담자가 자기 삶의 비평가로 성장하는 과정을 통해 경험의 의미화와 진로 정체성 형성이 이루어짐을 논의하였다. 이러한 관점은 특히 고립·은둔 청년과 같이 경험의 단절을 겪는 집단에 적용될 때, 삶을 하나의 이야기로 재구성하고 사회적 관계를 회복하는 실천적 접근으로 기능할 수 있음을 시사한다. 또한 본 연구는 취업 중심의 기존 진로지원 정책을 보완하여, 경험의 의미 구성과 정체성 형성을 중심에 둔 진로지원의 필요성을 제안한다.
This study aims to reconceptualize career not as a matter of simple choice but as a process of constructing experience, and to theoretically examine how narrative career counseling can function as a formative process of aesthetic experience based on John Dewey’s philosophy of experience. Dewey understood art as an integrated experience emerging through the transaction between the individual and the environment. Through the concept of “an experience,” he emphasized that experience has a unified structure consisting of a beginning, development, and consummation, and that meaning is generated through the cyclical interaction between doing and undergoing. Based on these concepts, this study redefines career as a process of identity formation unfolding within the flow of experience. To this end, the study interprets career from the perspective of transaction as a co-constructive process between the individual and the environment, and explores the integration of fragmented experiences based on the concept of “an experience.” It further analyzes how clients’ life experiences are reconstructed from micro-narratives into macro-narratives through the cyclical structure of doing and undergoing, thereby presenting the operating mechanism of narrative career counseling within the framework of career constructivism. In addition, by drawing on Dewey’s notion of the critic, this study redefines the role of the counselor and discusses how clients develop into critics of their own lives, leading to the formation of meaning and career identity. These perspectives suggest that narrative career counseling can serve as a practical approach for socially withdrawn and isolated youth by enabling them to reconstruct their lives as coherent narratives and restore social relationships. Furthermore, this study proposes the need to complement existing employment-centered career support policies by emphasizing the construction of meaning and identity through experience.
