시인으로서의 중봉 조헌의 면모 ― 중봉 한시의 일고찰 ―

중봉 조헌(1544∼1592)은 동국십팔현(東國十八賢) 가운데 한 사람이다. 조헌은 도끼를 들고 대궐 앞에 나아가 임금에게 당면 문제를 상소(持斧伏闕上疏)한 일이라든지, 임진왜란 때 의병을 일으켜 싸우다가 장렬하게 전사한 의병장으로서의 이미지 때문에 많은 사람에게 강하다는 인상을 남겼다. 그의 내면세계보다도 겉모습이 더 드러나 보였던 것이 사실이다. 그러나 조헌은 도학자이면서 감성적인 시인이기도 했다. 조헌의 시에는 풍부한 정서, 따뜻한 정감, 휴머니즘적 성격 등이 잘 녹아 있다. 한 마디로 조헌은 차가운 이성에다 따뜻한 감성을 고르게 갖춘 사람이었다. 사람의 정을 물씬 느끼게 하는 그런 인격의 소유자였다.
본고는 조헌의 한시를 문학적 측면에서 조명하는 것보다 한시를 통해 그의 인간적 면모를 안팎으로 살피려는 데 일차적 목적이 있다. 주로 당시풍(唐詩風)의, 서정성 높은 21수를 뽑아 시품(詩品)을 논하였다. 도학자, 의리지인(義理之人)의 그늘에 가려져 조명되지 못한, ‘시인으로서의 조헌의 면모’가 잘 드러나도록 하였다.
Jung-bong Cho Heon (1544∼1592) is one of the 18 Confucian scholars representing Chosun Dynasty. He left a tough image to ordinary people because of such historic events as: he appealed to the king about the social issues then in front of the palace carrying an axe (持斧伏闕上疏); he was a guerilla units’ leader who heroically fought against Japanese invaders during the Yim-jin War to death. It is, therefore, true that his external look is more brightly exposed than his internal world. He was, however, a Confucian scholar and an emotional poet as well. What stand from his poems are thought to be abundant emotion, warm sense and humanistic character, all which are well fused in his pieces of Chinese poetry. That is, he was a man who possessed not only cool intellect but also warm sense all throughout his life. He had the personality making us feel the love of human.
This article is not mainly focused on examining his Chinese poetry in the aspect of literature. It is rather ultimately aimed at looking both internally and externally into his personal sense of life through his Chinese poetry. 21 pieces that mainly show Tang Dynasty style (唐詩風) of poetry with high emotional sense have been selected to discuss the dignities of his poetry. It tries to disclose ‘Cho Heon’s life as a poet’ clearly, which has not been well lighted up being overshadowed by such images of his as a Confucian scholar and a fighter for Confucian truth (義理之人).
