이돈화의 도덕관은 20세기 한국 사회의 모순을 해결하기 위해 제기되었다. 그는 도덕을 형이상학적인 불변의 보편적인 실체로 여기지 않고, 지기(至氣)의 운행 과정에서 형성된 일정한 질서로 여긴다.
그는 동학의 성무선무악설의 관점을 계승하여 선과 악을 그 시대의 특성과 생활을 반영하는 가치의 기준으로 생각한다. 이는 선과 악이 처음부터 정해지지 않고 시대의 흐름에 따라 상호 전화될 수 있음을 의미한다.
그는 도덕을 초월적인 관념의 상태에서 누리는 비현실적인 가치가 아니라, 다양한 변화가 일상화되는 현실에서 발생하는 구체적인 문제를 본질적으로 해결할 수 있는 덕목으로 생각한다. 그는 수심정기와 삼경 사상을 통해 이상과 현실, 개인과 사회, 인간과 자연 등의 관계에서 나타나는 차별과 불평등과 같은 갈등 문제를 해결하고자 했다.
이는 그가 인간이 궁극적으로 추구하는 행복의 기준을 차별이 없는 평등사회의 실현으로 규정하는 것이다. 그는 불의에 저항하는 실천적인 태도의 중요성을 강조한다. 역사를 진화의 관점으로 바라보는 그는 생활에서 실천하는 이러한 도덕적인 삶을 진보의 상징으로 여긴다.
이돈화의 도덕관은 구체적인 역사에서 발생하는 갈등 문제를 본질적으로 해결하는 면에 이론적 기여를 할 수 있다.
Lee Don-hwa’s morality view was raised to resolve the contradictions in Korean society in the 20th century. He does not regard as a metaphysical and immutable universal substance about morality, but as a certain order formed in the course of operation of the extreme Qi(至氣).
He inherits the perspective of Donghak’s theory of the theory of that human nature is not the good and not the bad(性無善無惡說) and considers good and evil as a standard of value that reflects the characteristics and life of that era. This means that good and evil are not determined from the beginning and can be interconvert according to the flow of the times.
He considers morality not an unrealistic value enjoyed in the state of transcendent ideas, but a virtue that can essentially solve specific problems arising in the reality where various changes are commonplace. Through the keeping the mind and upright Qi(守心正氣) and the Three Respects(三敬) ideology, he tried to solve conflict problems such as discrimination and inequality in the relationship between ideals and reality, individuals and society, and between humans and nature.
This defines the standard of happiness that humans ultimately pursue as the realization of an equal society without discrimination. He emphasizes the importance of a practical attitude to resist injustice. Looking at history from the perspective of evolution, he regards this moral life in life as a symbol of progress.
Lee Don-hwa’s morality view can contribute theoretically to solving the conflict problem that arises in specific history.
