이 논고는 장-루이 크레티앙의 기도의 현상학을 해명하고, 이러한 현상학적 기도 이해가 지닌 세속적 맥락에서의 적용 가능성을 드러내는 것을 목표로 한다. 크레티앙은 철학에서 기도가 망상이나 자기분열로 폄훼된 사례가 기도의 의미를 온전히 이해하지 못하게 한다고 본다. 아울러 그는 기도를 신앙과 교리의 규범으로만 인식하는 것도 기도할 때 일어나는 체험의 의미를 이해하는 데 별 도움을 주지 못한다고 믿는다. 이 모든 기도에 관한 통념을 괄호치고, 크레티앙은 기도의 현상학적 체험의 의미를 기술하는 데 몰두한다. 그에 의하면, 기도는 시련과 투쟁의 말이다. 기도를 통해 우리는 절대적 타자에게 말을 건네는데, 이때 기도는 단지 나의 염원을 전달하는 것이 아니라 타자와의 투쟁 속에서 상처입은 말이 된다. 왜냐하면 기도하는 중에 나의 잘못된 욕망이나 올바르지 못함이 폭로되기 때문이다. 이렇게 해서 기도하는 자는 초월의 시련으로서의 타자와의 투쟁을 통해 얻게 된 상처의 상흔을 상기하게 된다. 결론적으로 나는 이러한 크레티앙의 기도에 관한 현상학적 접근이 세속인들의 기도와 공명한다는 점을 보여주면서 글을 마무리할 것이다.
This study aims to elucidate Jean-Louis Chrétien’s phenomenology of prayer and to demonstrate the potential applications of this phenomenological understanding of prayer within secular contexts. Chrétien contends that the disparagement of prayer as delusion or schizophrenia in philosophical discourse has prevented a complete understanding of prayer’s meaning. Furthermore, he believes that recognizing prayer solely as a norm of faith and doctrine provides little help in understanding the experiential significance of prayer. Bracketing all these conventional notions about prayer, Chrétien focuses on describing the phenomenological experience of prayer. According to him, prayer is a type of speech characterized by trial and struggle. Through prayer, we address the absolute Other, and in this process, prayer becomes not merely a conveyance of our wishes but a wounded speech in the struggle with the Other. This occurs because during prayer, our incorrect desires and improprieties are exposed. Thus, the praying individual is reminded of the scars of wounds acquired through the struggle with the Other as an ordeal of transcendence.In conclusion, I will conclude this paper by demonstrating how Chrétien’s phenomenological approach to prayer resonates with the prayers of secular individuals.
