바르샤바 게토의 살아있는 기억을 위한 글쓰기 : 디디-위베르만의 『흩어진 것들』을 중심으로
The Poetics of Éparses : Writing for the Living Memories of the Warsow Ghetto
본고의 목적은 제2차 세계대전 당시 바르샤바 게토에서 비밀리에 수집된 링겔블룸 아카이브를 다룬 디디-위베르만의 에세이 『흩어진 것들』을 중심으로, 기억의 위기에 처한 우리 시대 아카이브에 대한 유의미한 성찰과 실천의 가능성을 제안하는 데 있다. 여기서 디디-위베르만은 비물질적 기억이 아카이브를 통해 구체화되어 우리의 감각과 의식을 깨우는 일의 중요성을 강조하는 역사적 글쓰기를 실천한다. 그는 유대민족의 억압과 해방이라는 서사의 단일한 축을 따라 배치되는 기념비적 아카이브로부터 이들의 역사를 읽어내는 단선적 독해를 거부한다. 오히려 그의 ‘에세이’는 ‘몽타주-테이블’ 위에 수평적으로 동등하게 펼쳐진, 흩어지고 조각난 아카이브로부터 이들의 균열, 불화, 열화까지도 동시에 읽어내려 ‘시도한다.’ 본고는 이처럼 한 방향의 동질성을 향해 결집하지 않고, 예측할 수 없는 방향으로 복잡하게 굴절되며 흩어지는 디디-위베르만 고유의 글쓰기에 주목하고, 그러한 글쓰기가 어떻게 링겔블룸 아카이브의 이질성, 차이, 균열, 틈을 발견하고 있으며, 나아가 그 ‘분열적’ 특성을 오히려 미래를 향한 정동이 분출될 수 있는 계기로 제시하고 있는지 논구한다.
The purpose of this paper is to examine Georges Didi-Huberman’s essay Éparses—which deals with the Ringelblum Archive, clandestinely collected in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II—in order to propose meaningful reflections and emancipatory possibilities concerning the archive in our contemporary age marked by a crisis of memory. Didi-Huberman experiments with a form of historical writing that emphasizes the importance of awakening our senses and consciousness by concretizing immaterial memory through the archive. He does not linearly read the history of the Jewish people from monumental archives arranged along the single axis of narrative, focusing solely on their oppression and liberation. Rather, his essay attempts to simultaneously read from the dispersed and fragmented archive—laid out horizontally and equally on a ‘table of montage’—their ruptures, discord, and decay. This paper thus focuses on Didi-Huberman’s distinctive mode of writing that resists convergence into a single homogeneous direction, instead refracting and scattering in unpredictable ways. It further argues that such writing uncovers heterogeneity, difference, cracks, and gaps within the Ringelblum Archive, and presents these ‘schismatic’ characteristics as a catalyst for the eruption of affect oriented toward the future.
