에로스와 알테르 에고: 플라톤의 『향연』과 장-자크 루소의 『고백록』에 나타난 ‘또 다른 자아’의 에로스적 욕망에 대한 비교 연구
Eros and Alter Ego : Comparative Research into the Erotic Desire of Alter Ego in Plato’s Symposium and J.-J. Rousseau’s Les Connsfessions
이 글은 플라톤과 루소의 에로스 이론을 그 표면적 층위와 심층 심리학적 층위 사이의 변증법적 대립을 중심으로 비교 고찰하여 에로스적 사랑의 감정이 갖는 이중적 특성에 대한 더욱 깊은 이해에 도달하려는 시도다.
이를 위해 우선 플라톤의 『향연』에 나타난 디오티마의 에로스 이론을 그의 자아가 의식적으로 대변하는 이론으로, 아리스토파네스의 에로스 이론을 그의 또 다른 자아(alter ego)에 의해 무의식적으로 대변된 이론으로 설정하고 둘 사이의 연관관계를 해명하려 시도하였다. 또 루소의 『고백록』에 서술된 매우 충격적인 그의 마조히즘적, 노출증적 성향을 통해 드러난 무의식적 욕망으로서의 에로스와 『인간 불평등기원론』, 『신 엘로이즈』, 『에밀』에 나타난 그의 ‘공식적’ 에로스 이론 사이의 변증법적 긴장 관계를 집중적으로 고찰하였다.
이러한 각각의 연구 결과를 토대로 두 에로스 이론의 공식적 입장 사이에 존재하는 듯이 보이는 대립적 관계가 그들의 또 다른 자아에 의해 드러난 ‘비공식적’ 에로스 이론을 통해 어떻게 재검토되고 수정될 수 있는지 살펴보았다.
This article attempts to reach a deeper understanding of the dual characteristics of the emotion of Eros by comparing Plato’s and Rousseau’s theory of Eros, focusing on the dialectical opposition between their superficial and deep psychological layers. To this end, first, I attempted to explain the relationship between Diotima’s theory of Eros in Plato’s Symposium as a theory consciously represented by his ego, and Aristophanes’ theory of Eros as a theory unconsciously represented by his alter ego. In addition, I intensively examined the dialectical tension between Rousseau’s Eros as an unconscious desire revealed through his shocking masochistic and exhibitionistic tendencies described in his Confessions and his official theory of Eros in Discours sur l’origine et les fondements de l’inégalité parmi les hommes, Julie ou la nouvelle Eloïse, and Emile ou de l’Éducation. Based on the findings of each of these studies, I examined how the seemingly antagonistic relationship between the official positions of the two Eros theories can be reexamined and revised through the ‘unofficial’ Eros theories revealed by their alter egos.
