The Significance of Regret: The Intrapersonal Relationship Account
객관적 실천 합리성의 영역에서 미래의 후회는 선택을 평가하는 중요한 요소이다. 타산적으로 최적의 선택이라 할지라도 행위자가 그 선택을 깊이 후회할 것이라면 객관적 실천 합리성은 해당 선택의 회피를 정당화할 수 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 후회의 중요성을 설명하기 위해 내적 관계 설명을 제안한다. 이 설명에 따르면 미래의 후회가 현재의 선택에 중요한 이유는 그것이 현재 자아와 미래 자아 간의 도덕적 관계의 악화를 시사하기 때문이다. 본고는 내적 관계 설명이 P. Greene과 M. Sullivan이 제시한 약한 후회 원칙의 문제점을 극복할 수 있음을 논증함으로써, 후회에 대한 내적 관계 설명의 이론적 우위를 입증한다.
In the domain of objective practical rationality, whether a person will later regret her decision is a crucial factor in evaluating that decision. If a person will deeply regret her choice, then objective practical rationality might allow her to avoid that choice, even if the choice is prudentially optimal. This paper provides the intrapersonal relationship account to explain this phenomenon of regret. According to this account, the fact that a person’s future self will regret the person’s decision is important because it indicates that as a result of that decision the person has a morally worse relationship with her future self than if she had made an alternative choice. This paper argues that the intrapersonal relationship account provides a solid foundation for understanding the significance of regret as the account avoids the issues encountered by Greene and Sullivan’s Weak No Regrets.
