한스 요나스의 『책임의 원칙』에서 ‘Sorge’ 연구
‘Sorge’ in Hans Jonas’ The Imperative of Responsibility
이 글은 한스 요나스(Hans Jonas)의 책임 윤리에서 ‘염려’(Sorge)가 어떤 의미를 지니고 있는지를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 다시 말해, ‘미래 인류의 실존과 본질 지속’을 목표로 삼는 요나스의 생태적 책임 윤리에서 책임 실천과 관련하여 염려의 역할을 중심으로 알아보고자 한다. 요나스의 책임의 원칙에 따르면, “책임은 의무로 인정된, 다른 존재에 대한 염려”이다. 죽음, 곧 비존재에 대한 염려라는 인간의 본성적 측면에서 본 하이데거적인 염려의 의미를 확장하여, 요나스는 자신의 책임 윤리 안에서 미래세대를 돌보는 마음씀/배려를 기초로 한 책임의 의무를 구축한다. 현존재의 근본적인 상태가 염려이며, 현존재는 후세대에 대해 지극히 자발적으로 염려하고 있어서 염려에서 미래 후손의 실존과 본질, 그리고 모든 생명체를 존속시키고자 하는 책임의 감정이 나온다고 한다. 책임의 원칙에서 거론되는 염려, 공포, 연민, 희망 그리고 책임의 감정의 위상을 가늠해 보면, 요나스에게는 공포를 통한 책임의 위상이 가장 높은 것을 알 수 있다. 심리학에서 ‘능동적 행위성’으로 규정되는 희망의 경로 사고를 활용하면, 염려, 공포, 연민, 희망, 책임의 감정에서 역시 책임의 위상이 가장 높고 다른 여타의 감정들은 상호 연관 속에서 비슷한 위상을 가지지만 희망을 좀 더 중요한 위치에 두게 된다. 이 글을 통해 현존재의 감정적 토대에 있는 염려 감정에 접목한 생태적 책임 윤리의 전체적인 감정 구조를 염려-희망-책임으로 구체화하고, 이것이 어떻게 작용하는지 살펴본다. 요나스의 책임 윤리에서 염려의 감정이 책임의 감정 및 다른 감정들과 어떻게 상호작용하는지를 살펴보는 작업이 앞으로 이어질 의미 있는 학제적 연구들의 하나의 작은 댓돌이 되기를 희망한다.
This study aims to explore the role of ‘Sorge’ (care) in Hans Jonas’ ethics of responsibility, as articulated in The Imperative of Responsibility. The study examines how Jonas expands the Heideggerian concept of Sorge, originally grounded in existential concern for non-being, into a moral disposition oriented toward the future existence and essence of humanity. In Jonas’ ecological ethics, Sorge underpins the affective basis of responsibility, working alongside emotions such as fear, compassion, and hope. While Jonas emphasizes fear as the most urgent motivator of responsibility, this study suggests that hope, understood through the lens of psychological agency, may hold a more elevated role within the emotional structure. Ultimately, the paper proposes a triadic emotional framework, Sorge–hope–responsibility, as central to Jonas’ vision, and offers this analysis as a foundation for further interdisciplinary research into the ethical challenges of technological civilization.
