공학의 인식론과 공학자의 정체성에 대한 시론적 탐구
The Epistemology of Engineering and the Identity of Engineers
본 논문은 공학철학을 정립하는 작업의 일환으로 공학의 인식론과 공학자 의 자기 정체성을 탐구한다. 공학의 인식론은 ‘문제-문제 해결’의 도식으로 사태를 파악하는 것이다. 이를 통해 고전적 기술철학자의 기술사회 비판과 라투르의 행위 자 네트워크 이론의 한계를 새롭게 해석할 수 있다. 공학의 인식론과 공학자의 정 체성이 밀접한 연관성이 있다고 보고, 논문의 후반부에서는 공학자와의 심층 인터 뷰를 통해 파악한 공학 활동과 공학자의 정체성과 이상적인 공학자 상을 서술한다. 면담자들은 문제를 창의적으로 해결하는 전문가로서의 정체성과 사회적 책임을 인 정했으나, 공학자의 사회적 위상에 대해서는 만족하지 않는다고 답했다. I장 서론에 이어 본 논문의 II장은 공학의 인식론에 대한 이론적, 개념적 접근이 다. III장에서는 공학의 인식론과 공학자의 정체성 논의가 연결되는 지점을 간략히 서술한다. 이어서 IV장은 공학자와의 심층인터뷰를 정리하고 공학의 정의, 공학자 정체성, 공학자의 위상과 역할 등을 주제로 다룬다. V장에서 인터뷰를 통해 얻은 통찰을 정리하고, VI장에서 앞선 논의를 이미 제시한 공학의 존재론과 연결하여 공 학철학의 정립 가능성을 모색하고 향후 과제를 제시한다.
This paper explores the epistemology of engineering and the self-identity of engineers as part of the project of establishing the philosophy of engineering. The epistemology of engineering is to grasp a status of affairs the scheme of ‘problem-solving’. Through this, it is possible to newly interpret the criticism of technological society by classical philosophers of technology and the actor network theory of Bruno Latour. Assuming the close relationship between the epistemology of engineering and the identity of the engineer, the second half of the paper presents the result of in-depth interviews with engineers concerning the identities of engineering activity and engineer, and the notion of the ideal engineer. The interviewers identified themselves as experts who creatively solve problems and acknowledged their social responsibility, but answered that they were not satisfied with the engineer’s social status in Korean society. Following the introduction of Chapter I, Chapter II is a theoretical and conceptual approach to the epistemology of engineering. Chapter III briefly describes the point where the epistemology of engineering and the discussion of the engineer’s identity are connected. Chapter IV summarizes in-depth interviews with engineers and deals with the definition of engineering, engineer identity, and engineer’s status and role. The insights gained through interviews are presented in Chapter V and Chapter VI explores the possibility of establishing engineering philosophy and presents relevant future tasks.
