본 논문은 영화 <에브리씽 에브리웨어 올 앳 원스>를 중심으로 중국계 미국인 가족 관계가 문화적 글로컬라이제이션(glocalization) 속에서 어떻게 재구성되고, 이민자 문화적 정체성과 동서양 문화 차이를 영화에서 어떻게 형상화되는지를 분석한다. 영화는 중국계 이민자 가정의 일상적 삶을 사실적으로 그려내는 한편, 평범한 주부인 에블린이 다원적 우주 (Multiverse)를 넘나들며 모녀 관계를 회복하고 자아를 재발견하는 과정을 통해, 개인의 정체성과 문화 간 충돌 및 화해를 담아낸다. 2장에서는 에블린과 조이 간의 갈등을 중심으로, 동서양 간의 언어적 소통 방식과 가치관의 차이를 분석한다. 이를 통해 모녀 간의 갈등을 단순한 가족 문제가 아니라, 동서양 문화 간의 충돌로 확장함으로써, 내포한 보편적 문화 의미를 조명한다. 3장에서는 모녀 관계가 어떻게 완화되고 회복되는지를 중심으로 분석하며, 그 과정에서 등장하는 상징적 장면으로 동서양 문화가 상호 교차하고 글로컬 차원의 공존 가능성을 어떻게 구현하는지를 고찰한다. 이 갈등에서 화해로 나아가는 모녀 관계를 통해, 문화 간 대화와 융합의 가능성을 은유적으로 드러낸다. 따라서 본 연구는 <에브리씽 에브리웨어 올 앳 원스>가 지역성과 세계성이 상호작용하는 글로컬 서사의 대표적 사례임을 논증하며, 이를 통해 문화 다양성과 문화 교류의 새로운 가능성을 모색하고자 한다.
This study analyzes how the family relationships of Chinese Americans are reconstructed through cultural glocalization in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once, and how immigrant cultural identity and the cultural differences between East and West are represented within the narrative. The film realistically portrays the everyday life of a Chinese immigrant family, while following Evelyn, an ordinary housewife, as she travels across the multiverse, rediscovers herself, and reconciles her relationship with her daughter. Through this journey, the film illustrates the formation of individual identity and the process of cultural conflict and reconciliation.
Chapter 2 focuses on the conflicts between Evelyn and her daughter Joy, analyzing differences in communication styles and value systems between Eastern and Western cultures. By expanding the mother–daughter conflict beyond the domestic sphere to a broader cultural confrontation, the chapter highlights the film’s universal cultural implications. Chapter 3 examines how the mother–daughter relationship is gradually reconciled, and how symbolic scenes in this process represent the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures. It further explores how the film envisions the possibility of coexistence on a glocal level. The reconciliation between mother and daughter is presented as a metaphor for cultural dialogue and integration.
Ultimately, this study argues that Everything Everywhere All at Once serves as a representative example of glocalized narrative, where the interaction between the local and the global offers a new possibility for cultural diversity and intercultural exchange.
