남명 조식과 면우 곽종석의 안과 밖－마음[心] 이해와 사회적 실천의 관계
The Inner Side and Outer Side of Nammyeong Josik and Myeonwoo Kwak Jong-seok: The Relationship between Understanding the Mind[心] and Social Practice
이 논문은 같은 지역 출신 유학자로 16세기 인물인 남명 (南冥) 조식(曺植)과 19∼20세기 초 인물인 면우(俛宇) 곽종석(郭鍾錫)의 학문 성향을 연구한 것이다. 양자의 공통점을 중심으로 두 학자의 수양 론과 사회적 실천론의 영역을 탐구했다. 조식과 곽종석은 인간 내면 [心]에 대한 도학적 이해가 사회적 실천으로 연결된다는 공통점을 지닌 다. 조식은 ｢신명사도명(神明舍圖銘)｣을 지어 인간의 내면 수양과 정치 철학이 연결되어 있음을 주장하였다. 곽종석은 스승 이진상의 주리론을 따라 학술의 면에서는 퇴계학파를 계승했으나 조식의 ｢신명사도명｣을 계승한 ｢신명사부(神明舍賦)｣를 지어 내면의 수양과 외면의 사회적 인 식의 관계가 분리되어 있지 않음을 주장하였다. 이러한 공통적인 이해 를 바탕으로 조식은 사회적 비판의식을 종종 제출했고, 임진왜란 당시 57명의 의병장을 배출하였다. 곽종석 역시 일제강점기 아래에서 독립운 동에 투신하였다. 조식과 곽종석의 심법 이해는 한 나라의 운명을 걱정 하는 선비정신으로 이어진다.
This paper studies the academic tendencies of Nammyeong Josik, a 16th-century scholar from the same region, and Myeonwoo Kwak Jong-seok, a 19th-early 20th-century scholar. Focusing on their commonalities, this paper explores the areas of the two scholars’ theories of self-cultivation and social practice. Josik and Gwak Jong-seok share the commonality of connecting the Confucian Philosophical(道學) understanding of the human mind [心] to social practice. Josik wrote ｢Shinmyeongsado⋅myeong(神明舍圖⋅銘)｣ and argued that human self-cultivation and political philosophy are connected. Kwak Jong-seok followed his teacher Lee Jin-sang’s theory of Confucianism and succeeded the Toegye School in terms of scholarship, but wrote ｢Shinmyeongsabu (神明舍賦)｣ which succeeded Josik’s ｢Shinmyeongsado⋅myeong(神明舍圖⋅銘)｣ and argued that the relationship between self-cultivation and external social awareness is not separate. Based on this common understanding, Josik often presented social critical awareness and produced 57 leader of the Righteous Armies during the Imjin War. Kwak Jong-seok also devoted himself to the independence movement under Japanese colonial rule. The understanding of the mind of Josik and Kwak Jong-seok led to the spirit of a scholar who worries about the fate of a country.
