영웅 서사시 『마하바라타』의 텍스트성에 대한 재고: 철학 텍스트로서의 해석학적 가능성

마하바라타는 인도의 건국서사로 불리는 유동적 텍스트이다. 문헌학적으로 영웅 서사시, 의지문학, 역사서, 이티하샤 푸라나 장르로 규정되지만 텍스트의 정체성에 대한 의문이 늘 제기되었다. 본고는 인도역사의 최초 서사와 계보 전통의시작, 이티하샤-푸라나 전통 장르로서의 위상, 보리(BORI) 비판교정본과 편집자설 등 마하바라타 텍스트성이 갖는 주요한 쟁점사항을 해석학적 관점에서 분석해 본다. 그리고 전통서사의 성립과정에 대한 과도한 가설과 추정, 음유시인의 서사 주체 논란, 원본(Ur-text)과 규범적 편집의 문제, 편향된 학문적 시각과 오리엔탈리즘 등을 순차적으로 비판하여 마하바라타 텍스트 비평의 함의를 다각적으로 고찰한다. 이를 바탕으로 마하바라타가 베다전통의 철학 텍스트로 재평가받아야 한다는 해체적이고 환원적인 독법에 대한 이론을 소개하고 이에 대한 정당성을 제시하고자 한다.
The Mahabharata is a fluid Text called the epic of national foundation. Although it is philologically defined as a Heroic Epic, Upajivya(by which one lives) literature, History, and Itihasha-Purana genre, questions have always been raised about the identity of the text.
This paper analyzes the major issues of the textuality of the Mahabharata from a hermeneutical perspective, such as the beginning of the first narrative and genealogical tradition in Indian history, Itihasha-Purana’s Position as a Traditional Genre, and the editorial hypothesis surrounding the establishment of the BORI critical edition. In addition, it criticizes the excessive assumptions about the establishment process of the narrative of history and tradition, the controversy over the narrative subject of the bard(sūta), the problem of the original(Ur-text) and normative editing, the biased academic perspective, and Orientalism, etc., and aims to provide a new perspective on the existing Mahabharata textual criticism.
It aims to establish the inherent purpose of accomplishment(yojana) of the Mahabharata text, the soteriological tendency of dharma and liberation(mokṣa), and examine the possibility of interpretation as a philosophical text. The Mahabharata is a human text that is consistent with the purpose of human life (puruṣa-artha). Therefore, this paper proposes the necessity that the purpose of human beings and the purpose of scholarship should be consistent in the process of academicizing the Mahabharata, and aims to establish a theoretical foundation for the Mahabharata to function as a philosophical text by shifting from the 20th century ideological reading to the 21st century deconstructive reading.
