이 논문의 목표는 순자(荀子)의 윤리학에서 감정의 위상을 데이비드 흄(David Hume)의 감정 이론과 비교하여 탐구하려는 것이다. 전통적으로순자는 이성을 강조하는 철학자로 여겨졌으나 본 연구는 순자 윤리학에서 감정이 이성적 능력 못지않게 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 지적할 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 감정을 논의의 가교(假橋)로 설정하여 순자의 ‘정(情)’ 개념과 흄의 ‘passion’ 개념을 비교하고자 한다. 순자의 감정을 흄과 비교하는 작업을 통해순자 내재적 관점의 독해로는 드러나지 않았던 감정의 도덕적 기여를 발견하게 된다. 순자 윤리학에서 감정은 도덕적 사회의 장치인 예악(禮樂)의 바탕이되는 한편 피통치자인 백성들의 도덕적 승인 매커니즘은 위정자의 덕을 평가하고 지지하는데 이는 흄의 ‘공감의 원리’로 설명된다. 최종적으로 흄의 ‘일반적 관점’과 순자 성인(聖人)의 도덕적 인식 능력으로 비유되는 ‘대청명(大淸明)’의 경지를 비교하여 순자에서 감정과 이성의 조화가 강조되고 있는 것을 확인할 것이다. 이를 통해 이 연구는 이성과 감정의 이분법을 넘어 순자 윤리학을 유기적이고 총체적으로 이해하는 새로운 방식을 제안하고자 한다.
This study focuses on the issue of emotion, which has been relatively less explored in comparison to the importance of reason in Xunzi’s ethics, aiming to clarify the status of emotion in Xunzi’s ethical thought. Understanding the origins of morality through the lineage of reason or emotion provides an intuitive approach to ethical thinking, but there is a risk of one domain being overly emphasized while the other becomes marginalized. Consequently, Xunzi’s ethics have long been interpreted with an exclusive emphasis on the importance of reason. This paper seeks to reveal the necessity of adopting a holistic approach to the interrelationship between reason and emotion, moving beyond the conceptual dichotomy, through a comparative analysis with David Hume’s philosophical perspective. The main text illuminates the substantive role of emotion in Xunzi’s ethics. However, it is equally important to note that emotion cannot be solely weighted in Xunzi’s ethical framework. This is because the impartial and fair recognition of “Great Pure Understanding(大淸明)” must precede moral approval and disapproval. Just as Hume’s concept of the “general point of view” demonstrates the interdependent and complementary nature of reflection between reason and emotion, Xunzi’s ethics should be explained as a complex ethical system involving the interplay of reason and emotion.
