초록
죽음은 하나의 신비, 누구도 경험할 수 없는 절대적 신비처럼 여겨진다. 실제로 인간은 누구나 필연적으로 죽지만, 누구도 죽음을 직접 경험할 수는 없다. 살아있는 존재에게 자신의 죽음은 아직 벌어지지 않은 일일 뿐이며, 그것도 언제 벌어질지 정확히 알 수 없는 미래의 일일 뿐이다. 죽음은 직접적으로 경험될 수 없는 것으로서, 상상되거나 사유되는 것, 즉 관념일 것이다. 그런데 이런 죽음이라는 관념은 시간과 불가분의 관계를 맺고 있지 않은가? 아니 그 이전에, 죽음이라는 사건 자체가 과거, 현재 그리고 미래로 구성되어 있는 시간의 지평 속에서만 벌어지는 시간의 고유한 현상 아닌가? 우리는 먼저 죽음을 직접적으로 체험할 수 있는 어떤 가능성에 대해 탐색했던 것으로 보이는 장켈레비치의 논의를 비판적으로 고찰함으로써 죽음이 경험이기보다는 관념이라는 점을 밝힐 것이다. 이후, 베르크손의 무 관념에 대한 분석을 통해 이러한 죽음이라는 관념이 시간의 지평 속에서 구성된다는 점을 보여줄 것이다. 그리고 마지막으로 앙리의 논의를 통해 과거와 현재 그리고 미래로 구성된 시간의 지평은 다만 죽음이라는 관념이 성립하기 위한 조건일 뿐만 아니라 죽음의 장소 그 자체일 수 있음을 보여줄 것이다. 이러한 논의는 우리가 시간의 지평 밖에 위치할 때 죽음이 다른 방식으로 규정되고 직접 체험할 수 있는 무엇으로 나타날 수 있는 하나의 가능성을 제시해 줄 것이다.
Death is considered an absolute mystery that no one can experience. In fact, everyone inevitably dies, but no one can experience death directly. For a living being, its death has not yet occurred, and it is only a future thing that cannot be known exactly when it will happen. If death is something that cannot be experienced directly, it would be something imagined or thought about, that is, an idea. But isn’t the idea of death inseparable from time? Isn’t the event of death a unique phenomenon of time that takes place only in the horizon of time consisting of the past, present, and future? We will first reveal that death is an idea rather than an experience by critically examining Jankélévitch’s argument, which seems to have explored the possibility of experiencing death directly. Later, through Bergson’s analysis of the idea of nothing, it will be shown that this idea of death is constructed in the horizon of time. And finally, Henry’s discussion will show that this horizon of time is not only a condition for the idea of death to be established, but also a place of death itself. This discussion will suggest the possibility that death can be defined in different ways and directly experienced if we are outside the horizon of time.
