환경실용주의자들에 따르면 환경윤리학은 대두 이래 줄곧 ‘A인가 B인가?’ 하는 양자택일식 문제를 설정해놓고, 그 중 어느 한쪽을 선택해야 한다는 틀에 호소해왔다. 예를 들면, ‘인간중심주의인가, 비인간중심주의인가?’, ‘개체주의인가, 전체주의인가?’, ‘도구적 가치인가, 내재적 가치인가?’, ‘일원론인가, 다원론인가?’ 등이 대표적인 양자택일식 문제에 해당한다. 이러한 양자택일식 문제를 둘러싼 논쟁 결과 현재는 비인간중심주의, 전체주의, 내재적 가치, 도덕적 일원론을 취하는 것이 환경윤리학의 주류적 견해로 자리 잡았다. 하지만 환경실용주의자들은 이러한 주류적 견해에 대해 이의를 제기한다. 곧 그들은 환경윤리학이 이제까지 양자택일식 문제에 관한 논쟁에 전념한 나머지 현실적 문제해결을 위한 대응책을 제시하지 못함으로써 철저히 실패했다고 진단한다. 그들은 환경윤리학이 이러한 실패를 딛고 성공을 거두려면 구체적인 환경문제에 관해 현실적인 정책을 제안할 수 있는 방향으로, 곧 실용주의 노선으로 전환해야 한다고 주장한다. 이 연구의 목적은 환경실용주의의 본질을 규명하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 이 글은 환경실용주의의 대두 배경, 그것의 위상과 특징, 그것의 핵심적 주장 등에 대해 먼저 밝힌 후, 환경실용주의가 가져다준 의의와 함께 그 한계에 대해서도 살피고 있다.
According to environmental pragmatists, ever since its inception, environmental ethics has appealed to a framework that sets up binary questions such as “Is it A or B?” and then requires a choice between them. For example, issues such as “anthropocentrism or non-anthropocentrism?”, “individualism or holism?”, “instrumental or intrinsic value?”, and “monism or pluralism?” are typical binary choice problems. As a result of the debates surrounding these binary issues, it is currently believed that non-anthropocentrism, holism, intrinsic value, and moral monism are the preferable options, and these attitudes have become the mainstream views of environmental ethics. However, environmental pragmatists dispute these mainstream views. They argue that environmental ethics has failed miserably by focusing on debating binary issues and failing to provide responses to real-world problems. They argue that if environmental ethics is to succeed beyond this failure, it must shift to a pragmatic orientation that can propose realistic policies for concrete environmental problems. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the substance of environmental pragmatism. To this end, this article first explains the background of the emergence of environmental pragmatism, its status and characteristics, and its core arguments, and then examines the significance of environmental pragmatism and its limitations.
