현상학적 질적 방법론 고찰 I: 지오르지 현상학의 위상을 둘러싼 지오르지, 페일리, 자하비의 논쟁을 중심으로

본 연구는 네덜란드의 유트레히트 대학에서 시작된 인간과학에서 현상학의 방법론적 응용의 전통을 이어받아 1960년대 중반부터 후설 현상학적 심리학의 정신을 충실히 따르면서 고유의 현상학적 질적 방법론으로 개발된 지오르지(A. Giorgi)의 현상학의 방법론적 위상을 정당화하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본연구는 먼저 지난 5∼60년 동안 지오르지의 현상학이 어떻게 변화⋅발전해 왔는지를 검토하고, 지오르지의 현상학의 방법론적 위상을 둘러싸고 철학으로서 현상학과 질적 방법론으로서 현상학의 관계와 관련해서 그가 페일리(J. Paley), 자하비(D. Zahavi)와 벌인 논쟁을 검토하고 평가하고자 한다. 이와 같은 연구가 응용현상학으로서 지오르지의 현상학의 본질적 특성에 대한 이해를 높임으로써 향후 철학으로서 현상학과 질적 방법론으로서 현상학의 학제간 교류를 확대하고, 질적연구자들이 지오르지의 방법론을 올바르게 활용하는데 도움이 되길 기대한다.
Following the tradition of methodological applications of phenomenology in human science, which began at the University of Utrecht in Holland, this study aims to validate the methodological status of A. Giorgi’s phenomenology, which was developed with its own phenomenological qualitative methodology while faithfully following the spirit of Husserl phenomenological psychology in the mid-1960s. This study first examines how Giorgi’s phenomenology has changed and developed over the past 50 to 60 years, and examines and evaluates the debates he had with J. Paley and D. Zahavi regarding the relationship between phenomenology as a philosophy and phenomenology as a qualitative methodology around Giorgi’s qualitative methodology. It is hoped that by increasing the understanding of the essential characteristics of Giorgi’s phenomenology as an applied phenomenology, this study will expand the interdisciplinary relationship between phenomenology as a philosophy and phenomenology as a qualitative methodology in the future, and help qualitative researchers use Giorgi’s methodology correctly.
