화용론적 밀주의자들은 허구적 이름과 관련해 밀주의가 겪는 문제가 의미의 화용론적 측면에 주목함으로써 해결될 수 있다고 주장한다. 이들은 허구적 이름과 관련된 의미적 내용과 일상인들의 직관 사이에는 차이가 존재하며, 이러한 차이는 일상인들이 표현의 화용적 측면을 의미적 측면으로 착각했기 때문에 발생한다고 주장한다. 본 논문에서 필자는 이러한 화용론적 밀주의에 반대하여, 해당 이론이 갖는 문제들을 이전 논의들과 함께 연관지어 비판적으로 고찰한다.
Pragmatic Millians argue that the problems Millianism faces with fictional names can be solved by focusing on the pragmatic aspects of meaning. They claim that there is a clear difference between the semantic consequences associated with fictional names and the intuitions of ordinary people about them, and that this difference arises because ordinary people mistake the pragmatic aspects of an expression for its semantic aspects. In this paper, I argue against Pragmatic Millianism in connection with the previous discussions around it.
