비록 체계적인 형태는 아니지만, 플라톤은 감정의 중요성에 관한 그의 통찰을 자신의 대화편 곳곳에서 개진하고 있다. 이 논문은, 그렇게 제시된플라톤의 진술을 바탕으로, 플라톤 철학에서 감정의 지위와 역할을 진리와 선, 그리고 아름다움과의 연관 속에서 체계적으로 해명하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 논의의 순서는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 에로스와 경이의 감정이 진리의 인식에 어떻게기여하는지, 진리와 감정은 어떤 연관이 있는지에 관한 해명. 둘째, 에로스와 기개의 감정이 윤리적 선(혹은 올바름이나 정의)의 실현에 어떤 역할을 수행하는지, 윤리와 감정은 어떤 관계를 맺고 있는지에 대한 해명. 셋째, 아름다움의 인식과 체험에서 에로스적 감정의 역할은 무엇이며, 아름다움과 감정이 어떻게 상호작용하는지에 대한 해명.
Although not in a systematic form, Plato presents his insights on the importance of emotions throughout his dialogues. This paper aims to systematically elucidate the status and role of emotions in Platonic philosophy in relation to truth, goodness, and beauty, based on such statements by Plato. The order of discussion is as follows: First, an explanation of how the emotions of eros and wonder contribute to the recognition of truth and what relationship exists between truth and emotions. Second, an explanation of the role that the emotions of eros and spirit play in realizing ethical goodness (or righteousness and justice), and what relationship exists between ethics and emotions. Third, an explanation of what role eros-like emotions play in the perception and experience of beauty, and how beauty and emotions interact.
