존 스튜어트 밀의 신뢰 개념 분석 —『자유론(On Liberty)』을 중심으로—
An Analysis of John Stuart Mill’s concepts of Trust: Focusing on On Liberty
이 논문의 목적은 존 스튜어트 밀의 자유론에 내재된 신뢰 개념들을 구체적으로 분석하고 재구성하는 데 있다. 밀의 신뢰는 세 가지 개념, 즉 관용적, 사회 진보적, 그리고 공리적 신뢰 개념으로 분석된다. 밀의『자유론』에는 ‘신뢰’라는 용어가 명시적으로 등장하지 않지만, 그가 중요하게 여기는 주된 주제인 표현의 자유와 토론의 자유, 개별성의 존중, 사회 진보는 이러한 신뢰 개념들을 전제하고 있다. 우선 관용적 신뢰는 인간 인식의 오류 가능성을 인정하는 데서 출발한다. 그리고 사회 진보적 신뢰는 개별성과 삶의 다양한 실험이 ‘위해의 원리’에 위반되지 않는 한 사회 진보로 나아갈 수 있다는 믿음에 기반한다. 마지막 공리적 신뢰는 앞의 두 신뢰가 사회 전체의 행복에 기여할 때 정당화되는 믿음으로 밀의 공리주의적 입장을 잘 대변한다. 결국 이 논문은 밀의 세 가지 신뢰 개념과 각 개념의 연결과 확장을 보여줌으로써 우리 사회의 불신을 제거하기 위한 이론적 틀을 제시한다.
The purpose of this paper is to concretely analyze and reconstruct the concepts of trust embedded in John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty. Mill’s notion of trust can be examined in terms of three distinct concepts: tolerant trust, progressive-social trust, and utilitarian trust. Although the term “trust” does not explicitly appear in On Liberty, the work’s central themes—freedom of expression and discussion, respect for individuality, and social progress—presuppose these forms of trust. First, tolerant trust begins with the recognition of the fallibility of human knowledge. Progressive-social trust rests on the belief that individuality and diverse experiments in living can lead to social progress, provided they do not violate the “Harm Principle.” Lastly, utilitarian trust is the belief that the previous two forms of trust are justified only insofar as they contribute to the happiness of society as a whole, reflecting Mill’s utilitarian position. Ultimately, this paper presents a theoretical framework for overcoming social distrust by elucidating these three concepts of trust in Mill’s thought and demonstrating their interconnections and possible extensions.
