정확성주의는 정확성에만 호소하는가?

정확성 우선주의 인식론(이하 정확성주의)은 정확성(accuracy)이라는 인식적 가치에 초점을 맞춰 다양한 인식적 제약 원리들을 정당화하고자 한다. 여기에는 통시적 제약 원리인 조건화도 포함된다. 그런데 최근 드미트리 갈로는 조건화를 옹호하는 정확성에 기반한 기존의 논증이 성공적일 수 없다고 주장한다. 왜냐하면 기존의 논증은 정확성에만 호소해서 정당화될 수 없는 가정에 암묵적으로 의존하기 때문이라는 것이다. 갈로는 기존의 논증이 지닌 문제점을 극복하고자, 조건화를 위한 정확성에 기반한 새로운 논증을 제시한다. 그렇다면 갈로가 새롭게 제시한 조건화 옹호 논증은 갈로 자신이 제기한 문제에서 자유로운가? 이 논문의 주된 목적은 그렇지 않다는 것을 보이는 것이다. 더 나아가 정확성주의가 정확성에만 호소하기 어렵다는 것을 더욱 일반적으로 보이는 것이 이 논문의 또 다른 목적이다.
Accuracy-first epistemology attempts to justify various epistemic principles by appealing to accuracy. This includes conditionalization, a diachronic principle that tells us how our credences should change over time. Interestingly, however, J. Dmitri Gallow has recently argued that traditional accuracy-based arguments for conditionalization cannot be successful because they implicitly rely on assumptions that cannot be justified by appealing only to accuracy. To overcome this problem, Gallo proposes a new accuracy-based argument for conditionalization. But is Gallo’s new argument for conditionalization itself free from the problem he raises? The main goal of this paper is to show that it is not. Another goal of this paper is to show more generally that accuracy-first epistemology cannot appeal only to accuracy.
