이 글은 어떤 의미의 체계를 새로 세우려는 것이 아니다. 이 글은 서발터니티의 의미를 다루면서 의미 바깥에 있는 의미의 잠재성과 기존 의미 사이의 관계를 다루는데 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 아직 의미가 갖춰지지 않은 미의미(未意味)에 새로운 의미의 체계를 선물할 수는 없는 노릇이므로, 새로운 의미의 체계를 만드는 일이 가능할지는 미지수다. 이를 대신 하여 이 글은 새로운 의미가 생성되는 근원적인 구조를 다룬다. 이 구조는 비대칭성이라는 개념과 관계한다. 그래서 유의미한 것과 무(또는 미)의미한 것 사이의 비대칭적 관계, 없던 의미에서 새로운 의미를 만들어내는 번역 과정의 비대칭성을 설명하는 데 논의가 집중되어 있다.
생산된 의미가 일종의 사회적 약속을 통해 확정되고, 번역 역시 사회적 실천과 관계하기에, 이 의미론은 단순히 의미론에만 머물지 않고 사회적 실천론이나 사회 이론과 연결될 여지도 있다. 나아가 비대칭적 구조에서 출발하는 잠재성의 의미론은 새로 만들어진 의미를 새로운 의미 체계의 내부로 투입시키는 일을 정당화한다. 이를 통해 나는 기존 의미의 체계와 그 의미를 확정지었던 사회가 임계에 직면하게 된다고 주장한다. 이것이 임계의 의미론이다. 끝으로 무의미와 미의미라는 의미의 바깥에서 부단히 새로운 의미 생산과 수용을 강요당하는 과정을 통해, 기존 의미체계가 매번 새로운 임계에 직면할 것이므로, 임계의 의미론은 의미를 규정하고 정의하는 것이 아니라, 부단한 의미 생성 과정과 실천을 강조하는 과정으로서 의미론이자 잠재성의 의미론이 될 것이다.
This paper is not intended to establish a new system of semantics but focuses on the meaning of subalternity and the relationship between existing meaning and the potential for meaning outside of meaning. Since it is impossible to present a new system of meaning to a not-yet-meaning that has not yet been given meaning, it is unclear whether it will be possible to create a new system of meaning. Instead, this paper deals with the fundamental structure through which new meanings are created. This structure is related to the concept of asymmetry and as such, this paper focuses on explaining the asymmetric relationship between the meaningful and the meaningless (or not-yet-meaning) and the asymmetry of the translation process that creates new meaning from the object of meaning that did not exist.
Since the produced meaning is confirmed through a kind of social promise, and translation is also related to social practice, these semantics are not limited to mere semantics but can also be connected to social practice theory or social theory. Furthermore, the semantics of the potential that originates from an asymmetric structure, justifies the input of newly created meaning into a new semantic system. Through this, I argue that the existing system of meaning and the society that has established that meaning are facing a critical point, the semantics of criticality. Lastly, through the process of being constantly forced to produce and accept new meaning outside of the meaning of meaninglessness and not-yet-meaning, the existing meaning system will face a new criticality every time. The semantics of criticality is not about determining and defining meaning, but rather about the continuous process of meaning creation. Therefore, the semantics of criticality will be one of semantics as a process that emphasizes practice, and a semantics of potentiality.
