이 글은 헤겔 「정신현상학」의 양심 부분에서 전개되는 아름다운 영혼의 두 의식 형태들을 야코비의 소설 「볼데마르」의 두 주인공으로 해석하고자 한다. 이 해석은 구조적 유사성에 토대를 둔 정신현상학적인 소설 읽기라 할 수 있다.
야코비의 철학 소설 「볼데마르」는 아름다운 영혼들의 양심을 둘러싼 갈등과 화해의 이야기이다. 여기서 등장하는 헨리에테는 「정신현상학」에서 언급되는 행위하는 의식으로서 불행한 아름다운 영혼에 해당한다. 이에 대해 행위하지 않고 오직 판정하려고만 하는볼데마르는 「정신현상학」에서 등장하는 경직된 마음의 아름다운영혼이라 할 수 있다. 야코비는 이 소설을 통해 볼데마르가 내적으로 고수하고자 하는 순수한 우정과 헨리에테가 실천하고자 하는순수한 사랑의 이원론적 양립을 유지하면서도 궁극적으로는 사랑이 지니는 실천적 생의 능력을 더 강조하고자 한다. 이는 「정신현상학」 양심 부분에서 아름다운 영혼들의 고백과 용서를 통한 화해의 공동체 형성과 연결된다.
이렇게 순수 사랑의 실천을 통해 신과의 만남을 초대하는 「볼데마르」는 종교 장(章)으로의 입문이기도 한 「정신현상학」의 양심부분에서 잘 읽어낼 수 있다는 것이 이 글의 결론이다.
This article attempts to interpret the two forms of consciousness of the beautiful soul developed in the conscience part of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit as the two main characters of Jacobi’s novel, Woldemar. This interpretation is a spirit-phenomenological novel reading based on structural similarity.
Jacobi’s philosophical novel, Woldemar, is a story of conflict and reconciliation over the consciences of beautiful souls. Henriete, who appears here, corresponds to an unfortunate beautiful soul as an acting consciousness mentioned in Phenomenology of Spirit. Woldemar, who does not act and only tries to judge, can be said to be a beautiful soul with a rigid heart appearing in Phenomenology of Spirit. In this novel, Jacob tries to maintain the dualistic compatibility between the pure friendship that Woldemar wants to hold internally and the pure love that Henriette wants to practice, while ultimately further emphasizing the practical life ability of love. This is connected with the formation of a community of reconciliation through the confession and forgiveness of beautiful souls in the conscience part of Phenomenology of Spirit.
The conclusion of this article is that Woldemar, which invites an encounter with God through the practice of pure love, can be read well in the conscience part of Phenomenology of Spirit, which is also an introduction into the religion chapter of it.
