이 논문은 (질문1) 아리스토텔레스가 어떤 이유 또는 맥락에서질료형상론을 제기하는가, (질문2) 그 이론의 ‘질료와 형상’ 개념은 그에 상응한다고 여겨지는 ‘잠재태와 현실태’, ‘육체와 영혼’, ‘(자기운동자의) 부동의 원동 부분과 피동의 부분’ 등의 다른 개념 쌍들과 어떤 의미상 차이를 갖는가, 그리고 (질문3) 질료형상론이 현대 심리철학의 심신 문제에 어떤 식으로 적용되는가, 또한 아리스토텔레스의 이론과 어떤 차이점이 있는가를 살핀다. 이논의를 통해, 우리는 (답변1) 질료형상론이 자연학에서는 운동의 실재성을 주장하기 위해, 그리고 영혼에 관하여에서는 영혼의 운동성을 부정하기 위해 제기되고, (답변2) 다양한 개념 쌍들이 개념적인 측면의 차이는 있으나 실질적인 측면의 차이는 없으며, (답변3) 현대의 질료형상론도 아리스토텔레스의 견해와 별다른 발전이나 진보가 없는 것으로 보인다는 결론에 도달할 것이다.
This paper discusses (Question 1) for what reason or in what context Aristotle introduces so-called hylomorphism, (Question 2) whether there is any conceptual difference between the pair of the concepts, matter and form, and its corresponding pairs of concepts such as ‘potentiality and actuality’, ‘body and soul’, and ‘the unmoved moving part and the moved part of the self-mover’, and (Question 3) whether there is any difference between Aristotelian hylomorphism and the contemporary one in terms of the question in what way hylomorphism is applied to the mind-body problem in the philosophy of mind. Through discussing these questions, we shall reach the conclusion that (Answer 1) hylomorphism is introduced in the Physics to verify the reality of movement and in the De Anima to deny the movability of soul, (Answer 2) the pair concepts surely have some conceptual, but not real or actual, differences, and (Answer 3) the contemporary hylomorphism hardly seems to have made any development or progress from Aristotle’s hylomorphism.
