술어적 이름 사용과 프레게 퍼즐은 변항주의를 옹호하는가?
Do Predicative Name Uses and Frege’s Puzzle Support Variabilism
변항주의는 이름이 변항으로 기능한다고 보는 견해이다. 이러한 견해는 이름이 상항으로 기능한다고 보는 정통적 견해에 도전을 제기한다. 이를 위해, 최근 스쿠비는 자신의 변항주의 견해를 받아들일 세 가지 이유들을 제시한다. 본 논문의 목적은 스쿠비가 제시하는 이유들 중 실용적 이유들, 술어적 이름 사용과 프레게 퍼즐에 관한 이유가 제 역할을 하지 못한다는 것을 보이는 것이다. 이를 위해 논문은 먼저 술어적 이름 사용에 대한 변항주의적 접근 방식이 설명하지 못하는 부분들이 있다는 것을 보이고, 이후 프레게 퍼즐에 관한 변항주의적 해법 역시 몇 가지 문제들에 직면함을 보인다. 특히 프레게 퍼즐과 관련된 이유는 스쿠비뿐만 아니라 다른 변항주의자들 역시 옹호하는 이유라는 점에서, 이러한 작업들이 성공적이라면, 변항주의의 설득력은 변항주의자들의 나머지 이유인 이론적 이유에 의존하게 된다.
Variabilism is the view that names function as variables. This view challenges the orthodox view, which holds that names function as constants. Schoubye recently presented three reasons to accept variabilism. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the practical reasons Schoubye offers, those concerning predicative name uses and Frege’s Puzzle, fail to adequately support variabilism. To achieve this, the paper first shows that the variabilist approach to predicative name uses leaves a crucial point unexplained. It then argues that the variabilist solution to Frege’s Puzzle also faces several difficulties. Since the reason related to Frege’s Puzzle is accepted not only by Schoubye but also by other variabilists, if the goal of the paper is achieved, the persuasiveness of variabilism will rely solely on the remaining theoretical reason provided by variabilists.
