이 글은 존 듀이의 예술철학을 바탕으로 예술이 소통의 매개체로서 작동하는 방식을 세 가지 차원에서 분석한다. 첫 번째로 예술의 내적 작동원리의 차원에서, 예술이 질성적 경험을 표현하는 방식과 소통적 기능의 관련성을 상상력의 작용을 통해 해명한다. 상상력은 예술작품을 통해 감상자의 과거와 현재의 경험을 연결하여 다양한 의미를 창출하고, 이를 통해 세계와 타인에 대한 이해를 확장시킨다. 두 번째로 예술 창작과 감상에서 창작자와 감상자의 상호 참여가 발생하는 원리와 이를 통해 경험이 재창조되는 과정이 개인 간의 소통적 기능을 강화하는 측면을 살펴본다. 마지막으로 사회적 차원에서 예술이 경험의 공동체를 확장하고, 개인의 개별 경험과 공동체의 보편적 경험이 사회적으로 연결되는 원리를 설명한다. 결론적으로 예술은 사회구성원의 다양성을 보장하고 공동체의 연합을 실현하는 중요한 매개체로서, 상호 이해와 협력을 촉진할 수 있는 장을 제공한다는 점을 경험적으로 해명할 것이다.
This paper analyzes how art functions as a medium of communication based on John Dewey’s philosophy of art, focusing on three dimensions. First, in terms of art’s internal operational principles, it explores how the communicative function of art is related to the expression of qualitative experience, explained through the workings of imagination. Imagination connects the past and present experiences of the audience or viewers through artworks, creating diverse meanings and expanding understanding of the world and others. Second, the paper examines the principle of mutual participation between the creator and the audience or viewers in the process of art creation and appreciation, and how this process of re-creating experience enhances interpersonal communication. Finally, on a social level, it explains how art expands the community of experience, connecting individual experiences with the universal experiences of the community. In conclusion, art empirically demonstrates its role as an essential medium that ensures the diversity of social members while promoting unity within the community, providing a space that fosters mutual understanding and cooperation.
