Narrative Identity and Self-Understanding -A Critical Examination of MacIntyre’s Concept of “Narrative Unity”-

This paper begins from the concern that the philosophical question “Who am I?” has largely been reduced to debates over the ontological status of the self and the criteria of personal identity, leaving insufficient room for the practical questions of self-understanding and lived identity. It argues that narrative theories of self, developed in the late twentieth century, emerge from this shared concern. Focusing on Alasdair MacIntyre’s narrative account of the self, the paper examines the philosophical significance and limitations of his notion of narrative self-understanding. In After Virtue, MacIntyre introduces the concept of the “narrative unity” of a human life, according to which self-understanding is understood through narrative structure. This concept is normatively significant insofar as it provides a framework for rendering an agent’s life intelligible and for guiding practices of self-explanation and responsibility. The paper analyzes narrative unity along two dimensions: unity as pertaining to a person’s whole life, and unity as the integration of personal narratives with the narratives of tradition. It then considers critiques by Galen Strawson, John Lippitt, and Hilde Lindemann, which expose key difficulties in MacIntyre’s account. In response, the paper proposes a reconceptualization of narrative unity as a more modest and flexible “provisional unity.”
