롤즈의 합당한 다원주의 형성 방안 모색
A Strategy for Forming Rawls’s Reasonable Pluralism
『정치적 자유주의』에서 롤즈(John Rawls)는 합당한 다원주의(reasonable pluralism)를 하나의 ‘사실’로 전제하고 있다. 합당한 다원주의는 자유 민주주의 사회에 다양한 포괄적 교설들이 단순히 존재한다는 것을 넘어 ‘합당한’ 포괄적 교설들이 존재하고 있음을 의미한다. 이런 합당한 다원주의는 롤즈 정의론에서 정치적 정의관인 공정으로서의 정의(justice as fairness)가 구성되는 조건일 뿐만 아니라, 작동하는 토대에 해당한다는 점에서 중요하다. 그렇다면, 합당한 다원주의가 위협을 받아 더 이상 그 토대를 유지할 수 없게 된 사회에서는 어떻게 해야 정치적 자유주의를 다시 작동할 수 있게 할 수 있는 것인가? 다시 말해, 어떻게 하면 합당한 다원주의를 회복하게 할 수 있을까? 이 물음이 롤즈 시대에는 불필요할 수 있었겠지만, 다원성이 고도화되어 분열과 갈등이 심화된 21세기 현대 사회에서는 필요할 뿐만 아니라 중요한 물음이다. 본 논문은 롤즈 논의를 토대로 합당한 다원주의의 의미를 규명하고 합당한 다원주의를 형성 또는 회복하게 하는 방안을 재구성하고자 한다.
In Political Liberalism, John Rawls presupposes reasonable pluralism as a fact. Reasonable pluralism means that, beyond the mere existence of various comprehensive doctrines in a liberal democratic society, there are also reasonable comprehensive doctrines. This concept is important not only as a condition for the construction of justice as fairness in Rawls’s theory of justice, but also as the foundation on which it operates. How, then, can political liberalism be made to function again in a society that was once characterized by reasonable pluralism, but has since experienced threats to and collapse of that pluralism? In other words, how can we restore reasonable pluralism? While this question may have been unnecessary in Rawls’s time, it has become both necessary and important in today’s highly pluralistic, divided, and conflict-ridden society. This paper aims to clarify the meaning of reasonable pluralism based on Rawls’s discussion and to present a strategy to form or restore it.
