이 논문은 기술적 상상력의 본성에 대해 시몽동과 라투르의 기술철학을 통해서 해명한다. 시몽동과 라투르에 따르면, 기술적 활동은 인간의 의도와 목표를 초과하는 잠재성과 예측불가능성을 내포하며, 효율적이거나 통제가능한 도구들로 환원되지 않는다. 시몽동의 기술적 상상력이 변환 작용으로 양립불가능한 기술적 요소들 간의 새로운 앙상블을 발명하고자 한다면, 라투르의 기술적 상상력은 번역과 매개 작용으로 이질적 행위소들 간에 새로운 행위의 연결망을 구축하고자 한다. 이들의 기술적 상상력은 단지 창의력이나 기술적 도구 활용에 그치는 것이 아니라, 기술과 연동되어 있는 우리의 미래를 기획하고 우리가 거주하는 세계의 가치와 의미체계를 변화시키는 결정적인 힘이다. 인간의 통제 하에 투명하게 작동하는 기술이라는 통념을 해체하고 기술적 상상력의 비인간중심적인 특성과 예측불가능한 초월성을 강조하는 이들의 주장을 살펴보면서 인공지능과 디지털 정보기술 시대에 기술적 상상력이 갖는 무게를 가늠해보고자 한다.
This paper aims to elucidate the nature of technical imagination through the philosophies of technology put forward by Gilbert Simondon and Bruno Latour. According to Simondon and Latour, technical activities contain potentialities and unpredictability that transcend human intentions and goals, and thus cannot be reduced to efficient or controllable tools. While Simondon’s technical imagination seeks to invent a new ensemble between incompatible technical elements through transduction, Latour’s technical imagination seeks to construct a new network of actions between heterogeneous agents through translation and mediation. Their concept of technical imagination goes beyond mere creativity or the utilization of technical tools; it represents a decisive force that shapes our future intertwined with technology and reconfigures the systems of values and meanings in the world we inhabit. By examining their arguments, which dismantle the conventional notion of technology as a transparently functioning instrument under human control, and emphasize the non-human-centered characteristics and the unpredictable transcendence of technical imagination, this paper seeks to assess the significance of technical imagination in the era of artificial intelligence and digital information technologies.
