우리나라의 사찰림은 경관이 뛰어나고 보존 상태가 양호하여 높은 공익적 가치를 가지고 있는 불교의 유산으로, 불자의 수행 장소이자 사찰 경제의 중심으로 소중하게 관리되며 사회적 요구에 따라 다양한 역할을 하고 있다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 사찰림의 가치와 역할에 대하여 사회적 이슈는 어떻게 변화해 왔는가를 살펴보기 위해 뉴스 빅데이터를 대상으로 텍스트 마이닝 기법을 활용한 분석 및 고찰을 수행하였다.
이의 결과로 첫째, 이슈화된 내용을 정리하면 크게 ① 과세 면제와 템플스테이 예산, 문화재 관람료 등, 사찰림에 대한 사회적 인식 부족으로 인한 논쟁과 갈등, ② 대형산불에 기인한 사찰림 보호 활동의 강화, ③ 신재생 에너지, 탄소중립, 북한과의 교류와 같은 사회 공헌 활동 연계 등으로 구분할 수 있다. 이를 통해 사찰림의 기능과 가치에 대한 사회적 인식과 평가는 아직 높지 않다는 것과 불교계는 사찰림을 활용하여 국가와 사회에 대한 기여 활동을 꾸준히 계획하고 실행하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 마지막으로 이슈들의 시간별 변화를 살펴보면 사찰림에 대한 지위와 역할 정립에서 보호 및 활용 방안의 구체화로 이어지며 사회 기여 역할이 확대되고 있음을 볼 수 있다.
이 같은 분석 결과에 따라 향후 사찰림의 발전을 위해 우선 고려할 점은 사찰림에 대한 사회적 인식 전환과 가치 제고를 위해 좀 더 적극적인 홍보 및 교육활동에 관한 노력이 필요하고, 향후 사찰림의 지속 가능한 경영과 정부ㆍ사회의 지원 및 공감대를 확대하기 위해서는 탄소중립과 같은 시대적 과제에 대해 좀 더 구체적인 계획과 실행이 필요하다.
Korean temple forests are of high public value as outstanding landscapes and well-preserved Buddhist heritage. They are also carefully managed as places of Buddhist practice and important economic resources for temples, playing a variety of roles according to social needs. Using text mining techniques, this study analyses and examines big data from the news to see how social issues around the value and role of temple forests have changed.
As a result, with the exception of general awareness of temple forests, the social issues can be broadly categorised as follows: ① controversies and conflicts due to lack of social awareness of temple forests, ② strengthening protection of temple forests, and ③ social contribution activities. In addition, it can be confirmed that the government and society’s appreciation of the function and value of temple forests is still not high, and the Buddhist community is consistently planning and implementing activities to contribute to the country and society through the use of temple forests. Finally, the changes in issues over time can be summarised as: establishing the status and role of temple forests → specifying protection and use plans → expanding the role of social contribution.
According to the results of this analysis, the priority task for the future development of temple forests is to make more active efforts in publicity and education activities to change social awareness of temple forests and increase their value. In addition, more specific planning and implementation of contemporary issues such as carbon neutrality are needed to expand the sustainable management of temple forests and to gain the support and consensus of the government and society.
