이 논문의 목적은 비자연적 도덕적 실재를 상정하지 않아도 도덕의 권위를 입증할 수 있음을 주장하는 것이다. 말하자면 자연주의적 구도 안에서도 ‘왜 도덕적이어야 하는가?’에 대한 답 혹은 근거를 제시할 수 있음을 보이는 것이다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 다음과 같이 전개될 것이다. 먼저 논문이 목표로 하는 ‘입증’이 무엇인지를 명료화한다. 그것은 도덕적 감수성을 가지고 도덕적 기획에 참여하고 있는 이들에게 도덕을 따르는 것이 필요한 이유를 제시하는 것이다. 다음으로 필자의 ‘감정주의적 실용주의’의 관점에서 도덕의 권위가 어떻게 입증될 수 있는지를 보일 것이다. 도덕은 도덕적 감수성과 이기심을 모두 가진 종(種)으로서의 인간이 함께 살아감에 있어서 발생하는 도덕적 문제들을 해결하는데 기여한다는 측면에서 정당화될 수 있다. 마지막으로 실재 없는 도덕은 도덕이 갖추어야 할 필수적인 요소를 결여하고 있다는 입장으로부터 기인하는 불안을 해소한다. 인간의 필요와 관심 혹은 계획을 위한 행위나 이해가 외부 세계 혹은 실재에 대한 정확한 ‘표상’보다 덜 중요하지 않음을 보일 것이다. 이를 통해 도덕의 기능에 근거한 정당화가 실재에 근거한 정당화가 가진 도덕의 필수적인 요소를 결여하고 있다는 입장이 그릇된 것임을 주장한다.
The The aim of this paper is to argue that it is possible to vindicate the authority of morality without postulating non-natural moral reality. In other words, it demonstrates that it is possible to provide an answer or rationale to the question “Why be moral?” within a naturalistic framework. The plan is as follows. First, I will clarify what I mean by ‘vindication’, which is the aim of this paper. It is to show why it is necessary to obey morality for those who have moral sensibilities and are engaged in an ethical project. Next, I will illustrate how the authority of morality can be demonstrated from the perspective of ‘sentimentalist pragmatism.’ Morality can be justified in terms of its contribution to solving the moral problems that arise from living together as a species that has both moral sensibilities and self-interest. Finally, I will allay the anxieties that arise from the position that morality without reality lacks the vital elements that morality should have. I will show that actions or understandings that serve human needs, interests, or projects are not less important than accurate ‘representations’ of the external world or reality. In doing so, I will argue that the position that justification based on the function of morality lacks the essential elements of morality, is false.
