자본주의 비판 전략을 찾아서: 호네트와 프레이저를 중심으로

1990년대 초반 현실 사회주의의 몰락 이후 자본주의는 현실적 대안이 없는 체제라는 위상을 얻었다. 그후 30년 간 자본주의에 대한 불만과 더불어 설득력있는 비판에 대한 갈증은 심해져 갔다. 그러나 여전히 자본주의 비판을 위한 유력한 모델은 없다. 이 글의 목적은 이러한 상황에서 프랑크푸르트학파 비판이론 전통에서 하버마스 이후 자본주의 비판을 모색하는 시도들에 대해 중간평가를 해보는 것이다. 이때 관심의 중심은 악셀 호네트와 낸시 프레이저의 작업이다. 이 두 이론가의 분배냐, 인정이냐? 논쟁 이후 호네트의 작업은 자유의 권리(Das Rechtder Freiheit)로, 프레이저의 작업은 좌파의 길. 식인 자본주의에 반대한다로 이어졌다. 이 글은 자본주의 비판 전략에 초점을 맞춰 호네트와 프레이저의 작업을 비판적으로 살펴보고 그 성취와 한계를 평가해 보려고 한다.
Although there still seems to be no alternative to capitalism after the failure of real socialism, there is obviously growing discontent with capitalism during the past three decades. It is also clear, however, that there is not the prominent model of the critique of capitalism. My aim in this paper is to examine the approaches of Axel Honneth and Nancy Fraser, both of whom are looking for a strategy of criticism of capitalism in the tradition of the Frankfurt School after Jürgen Habermas. After their controversy in Redistribution or Recognition, Honneth presented Freedom’s Right and Fraser Cannibal Capitalism.
