20세기 후반 숭고가 재조명된 이래, 주류 포스트모던 철학자들의 숭고 논의에서 여성주의적 시각을 찾아보기는 힘들다. 그럼에도 비슷한 시기에 문학 이론에서 여성적 숭고의 단초를 발견할 수 있는데, 이 글은 이로부터 시작하여 여성적 숭고의 계보를 파악하고 이 논의들 사이에 본질주의를 둘러싼 긴장의 문제가 있음을 확인한다. 이에 크리스테바의 아브젝시옹 개념에서 여성적 숭고 논의를 끌어냄과 동시에 이 개념이 기존 여성적 숭고의 본질주의적 긴장을 해소할 수 있음을 보인다. 아브젝시옹의 기반인 어머니의 몸이 가변성과 역동성을 지닌다는 점과 이에 따라 경계의 움직임이 일어난다는 점은 아브젝시옹의 여성적 숭고가 어머니의 몸이라는 요소를 배제하지 않고도 범주를 위반하는 경험으로서 반본질주의에 가까이 있음을 보여준다. 최종적으로 이 글은 본질주의적 긴장을 해소하는 아브젝시옹의 여성적 숭고가 어머니의 몸을 기반으로 하여 남성중심적으로 젠더화된 숭고에 대한 위반성을 지닌다는 점을 주장한다.
Since sublime was re-examined in late 20th century, it is not easy to discover feminist perspective on the sublime discussed by mainstream modern philosophers. Still and all, we could find the beginning of feminine sublime in literature theory around the same time. Starting from this, this article aims for identifying the pedigree of feminine sublime in the literature theory and finding that there is the tension between essentialism and anti-essentialsm. Therefore, I draw the discussion of feminine sublime from the concept of abjection and at the same time demonstrate that this concept resolves the tension that the established discussion of the feminine sublime contains; it is revealed that the feminine sublime of abjection is closely related to anti-essentialsm as transgressive experience towards categories without excluding the element of maternal body in that the maternal body is dynamic and variable and thus movement of border occurs. Finally, this article argues that the sublime of abjection, which resolves the tension around essentialism versus anti-essentialism, has the character of transgression towards malecentric gendered sublime.
