아리스토텔레스의 학문 방법론에 대한 연구는 주로 분석론 후서를 중심으로 이루어졌다. 하지만 분석론 후서는 주로 ‘논증’의 모델을 제시하는 데 관심을 두고 있어서, 논증의 출발점이 되는 전제들을 발견하기 위한 탐구의 방법에 대해서는 매우 제한된 정보를 제공할 뿐이다. 전제들로부터 결론의사실을 증명하는 ‘하향 추론’이 아니라 그 반대 방향의 추론, 즉 주어진 사실로부터 그것의 원인을 발견하기 위한 ‘상향 추론’ 혹은 ‘탐구적 추론’의 구조를 발견하기 위한 많은 연구자들의 노력이 만족스런 결과를 낳지 못한 이유가 거기에 있다. 이 글의 목적은 지금까지 이루어진 연구의 관점과 다른 관점에서, ‘논증적 추론’이 아닌 ‘탐구적 추론’의 방법을 찾아내는 데 있다. 이를 위해서 나는먼저 탐구과 발견의 방법에 대한 기존의 연구들이 가진 한계들을 검토한 뒤, 아리스토텔레스의 여러 저서에서 ‘탐구’ 혹은 ‘추론’이라고 불리는 숙고와 상기의과정을 분석함으로써 그런 ‘탐구적 추론’에 공통적인 것이 무엇인지를 찾아내려고 한다. 그리고 동물발생론에 등장하는 스페르마의 본성에 대한 탐구를 예로들어 ‘탐구적 추론’이 실제 생물학적 탐구에서 어떻게 적용되는지를 보이려고한다.
Previous studies of Aristotle’s scientific method have focused mainly on the Anal. post. However, because this work is primarily concerned with providing a model for ‘demonstration,’ it offers very little information about the methods of searching (zētēsis) used to discover the premises on which a demonstration is based. For this reason, many researchers have attempted to determine the structure of ‘bottom-up’ or ‘searching’ reasoning – that is, reasoning that proceeds in the opposite direction to ‘top-down’ demonstration to uncover the cause of a given fact – but they have done so without satisfactory results. The aim of this article is to explore the structure of the ‘searching reasoning’ from a new perspective.
To do so, we will first assess the limitations of existing research on the methods of searching and discovery (heuresis), and analyze the process of deliberation (bouleusis) and recollection (anamnēsis), both referred to as ‘searching’ or ‘reasoning’ (syllogismos) in various writings of Aristotle, in order to identify their commonalities. We will then show how this ‘searching reasoning’ is applied to real biological inquiry, using the investigation of the nature of sperm in the De gen. an. as an example.
