초록
속물근성은 예술과 미적 영역에 만연해 있으며, 그로 인해 우리의 미적 감상과 판단은 매우 빈번하게 왜곡되거나 훼손되는 것으로 보인다. 문제는 많은 경우 우리가 어떤 미적 반응이나 판단이 속물근성에 의거한 것이고 어떤 것이 아닌지 식별하지 못한다는 것이다. 이러한 불확실성은 모든 미적 판단의 정당성에 대한 의문으로 이어져 예술과 미적 영역에서의 많은 논의를 약화시킬 뿐만 아니라 앞으로의 발전을 저해하는 중대한 방해요소가 될 수 있다. 게다가 만연한 속물근성은 우리의 미적 반응과 감상 모두를 오염시키면서 감상과 관련된 여러 악덕을 유도할 수 있다. 이는 예술 세계와 미적 영역에 참여하는 모든 이들의 즐거움을 상당 부분 앗아갈 수 있는 동시에 많은 이들로 하여금 그러한 참여 자체를 저어하게 하는 중요한 요인으로 작동할 수 있다는 점에서 심각한 문제가 된다.
이 글은 먼저 속물근성에 대한 진지한 미학적 탐구의 첫 시도라 할 수 있는 매튜 키이란의 논의와 그 뒤를 잇는 학자들의 논의를 검토하면서 속물근성이 미적 영역에서 구체적으로 어떤 모습으로 나타나는지 살펴본다. 또한 그 과정에서 속물적인 미적 반응이나 판단이 언제 그리고 왜 정당화될 수 없는지, 그리고 속물근성이 어떻게 우리의 미적 판단을 왜곡시키는 데 그치지 않고 우리의 삶에 악영향을 미치는 악덕이 될 수 있는지 살펴본다. 그런 다음 속물근성에 대한 기존의 논의들에서 보완되어야 할 지점에 주목해보는 것으로 이 글은 마무리된다.
Snobbery is pervasive in art and aesthetic domains, frequently distorting and compromising our judgments. The problem lies in our inability to discern which aesthetic responses stem from snobbery and which do not. This uncertainty extends to questions of legitimacy in all aesthetic judgments, weakening discourse and impeding development in the field. Moreover, pervasive snobbery can contaminate our aesthetic appreciation, potentially inducing various related vices. This not only diminishes the pleasure of those who participate in the art world but also deters others from engaging with it altogether.
This paper first examines the manifestation of snobbery in aesthetics by reviewing Matthew Kieran’s pioneering investigation and subsequent scholarly discussions. Through this analysis, it explores when and why snobbish aesthetic judgments lack justification, and how snobbery transcends mere distortion of aesthetic judgment to become a vice affecting broader aspects of life. The paper concludes by identifying areas requiring further development in current discussions of snobbery.
