그로테스크는 극도의 다양한 현상과 개념의 모호성 및 유동성을 지닌다. 그것의 정체성과 위상학적 차원의 본질에 관한 본격적인 이론적 접근이 시작된 것은 꽤 늦은 20세기이다. 본 연구의 목적은 이론의 축에서 그로테스크 진화와 변신의 양상을 계보학적으로 재추적하는 것이다. 이를 위해 르네상스에서 19세기에 이르기까지의 개념적인 변화, 그리고 20세기의 대대적인 귀환과 의미의 전환, 최종 포스트모더니즘 이후의 개념적 확장과 그로테스크에서 나타난 존재론적 전회(轉回)의 양상을 시대별로 재구성한다. 이는 종국에 역동적인 그로테스크가 탈 구획화를 통해 동시대에 철학적인 사유의 장으로 새롭게 진화하는 과정을 추적하는 일이 될 것이다. 한편 20세기 후반 포스트모더니즘의 차이 타자성 이종론에 관한 전망 속에서 그로테스크는 급진적인 담론의 형태로 진화하였고 카니발 자기소외 아브젝트 혼종과 같은 다른 용어로도 번역되었다. 그리고 현상의 차원에서 현대에 “그로테스크는 어디에나 있다”. 포스트모던 시기에 제기된 중요한 질문 중 하나는 이런 조건에서 그로테스크는 과연 정체성과 본질에 대한 인식을 지켜낼 수 있을까? 혹여 상실의 위기 속에서 사멸하는 것은 아닐까? 하는 것이었다. 본 연구는 이 질문에 이론가들이 어떻게 접근하는지에 관심을 둔다. 21세기의 이론가들에게는 사멸보다는 변신의 능력 속에서 어떻게 그로테스크가 새로운 형태로 재차 귀환하는지를 관찰하는 것이 관건이 되는 듯하다. 포스트휴머니즘과 신물질론의 일부 담론은 이러한 기회를 제공하는 듯이 보인다.
The full-fledged theoretical approach to the identity and topological nature of the grotesque began quite late in the 20th century. The purpose of this study is to genealogically re-trace the evolution and transformation of the grotesque from the axis of theoretical development. To this end, the conceptual changes from the Renaissance to the 19th century, the great return and transformation of meaning in the 20th century, the conceptual expansion after the final postmodernism, and the aspects of the ontological turn in the grotesque are reconstructed by period. This will ultimately be a task of tracing the process in which the dynamic grotesque evolves into a new field of philosophical thought in the contemporary era through decompartmentalization. Meanwhile, in the perspectives on difference, otherness, and heterology of postmodernism in the late 20th century, the grotesque evolved into a form of radical discourse and was translated into other terms. And in terms of phenomena, the grotesque is “everywhere” in modern times. One of the important questions raised in the postmodern period was whether the grotesque could maintain its identity and essence under these conditions? Or would it end in a crisis of loss? For theorists of the 21st century, it seems to be a key issue to observe how the grotesque returns in a new form in its ability to transform. Some discourses of posthumanism and new materialism seem to provide such an opportunity.
