교육학의 하위영역들이 확대‧분화되어온 역사적 사실을 고려할 때, 교육학의 자율성 문제에 대한 논의는 교육학의 근본적 학제성에 관한 사유에 기반을 둘 필요가 있다. 심층적 실재와 인과기제들의 층화를 주장하는 비판적 실재론은 학제성에 관한 존재론적 기초를 제공할 수 있는 과학철학이다. 이 과학철학에 따르면, 일반적으로 하나의 사건은 다수의 기제들이 동시에 작동한 결과 다중결정된다. 비판적 실재론에서 다섯 가지로 구분되는 ‘적층체계(laminated system)’는 기제들의 환원불가능성을 강조하는 층위모형이다. 이 가운데 ‘존재론적 적층체계’는 기제들의 존재론적 우선순위를, ‘규모의 적층체계’는 기제들의 규모 수준을 기준으로 한다. 교육은 이 두 적층체계들의 다양한 수준에 걸쳐 있는 다층적 현상이다. 동시에, 교육은 적층체계의 어느 한 층위로 환원될 수 없다. 교육의 다층성과 환원불가능성으로 인해, 교육학은 근본적 학제성과 함께 상대적인 자율성을 지니게 된다. 다층적이고 환원불가능한 교육에 대한 종합적 통일체로서의 지식을 구축하기 위해, 교육학은 교육에 관한 분화된 지식들을 종합하기 위해 노력해야 하며, 교육철학은 이를 위한 구심점 역할을 해야 한다.
When considering the historical fact that subfields within educational research have expanded and diversified, the discussion on the autonomy issue of educational science must be based on deliberation about the fundamental interdisciplinarity of the science. Critical realism, which asserts the depth reality and stratification of causal mechanisms, provides ontological foundations for interdisciplinarity. According to this philosophy of science, in general, an event is the result of multiple mechanisms operating simultaneously. Critical realism categorize five kinds of “Laminated System(LS),” emphasizes the irreducibility of mechanisms. Among these LS, the “ontological LS” is based on the ontological priority of mechanisms, while the “scale LS” is based on the scale of mechanisms. Education is involved in multi-stratified phenomena across various levels within these two LSs. Simultaneously, education cannot be reduced to any single level of the LSs. Because of multi-stratified and irreducible nature of education, science of education possesses both fundamental interdisciplinarity and relative autonomy. To construct synthetic integration of knowledge about multi-stratified and irreducible education, science of education must integrate divided knowledge related to education, and philosophy of education should play a pivotal role in this endeavor.
