교사 개인이 아닌 학교공동체가 지는 교육적 책임: 듀이의 개인주의 비판을 중심으로

초록
서이초 사건 후 교사들은 대규모 시위를 통해 교권 보호 필요성을 호소하였고, 그 결과 교권 보호 4법이 개정되었다. 하지만 서이초 사건으로 드러난 우리 사회의 학교교육의 문제는 법 개정만으로는 해결될 수 없는 것으로 보다 깊이 있는 이해와 분석을 시도하는 것이 필요하다. 그 일환으로 연구자가 주목한 것은 학교의 개인주의 문화인데, 이는 현대사회의 개인주의가 학생, 학부모, 교사 모두에게 중층적인 영향을 미친 결과이다. 듀이(Dewey)는 기계 문명과 자본주의 경제 체제의 영향으로 비인격화된 ‘거대 사회’가 출현하면서 공동체가 무너지고, 개인성이 약화되는 자본주의적 개인주의의 시대가 시작됐다고 말한다. 비가시성을 특징으로 하는 거대 사회 속에 태어나 자란 세대는 사회적 감각을 기르기 어려운 환경에 놓여 교사의 권위를 인정하지 않는 학생들이 다수 생겨나게 된다. 또한 거대 사회 속에서 불안을 내면화하며 자란 세대가 학부모가 되어 그 불안을 자녀에게 투사하면서 교사에게 ‘갑질’을 하는 등의 행동으로 나타나기도 한다. 이런 변화에 교사들이 잘 대처하지 못하고 있는데, 이 또한 현대사회의 개인주의의 영향으로 교직사회가 극단적으로 개인화되어 교사 개인이 각각 고립되어 있기 때문이다. 이 문제를 극복하기 위해서는 교직사회를 공동체로 그리고 학교를 공동체로 만드는 것이 필요하다.
After the Seoi Elementary School incident, teachers proclaimed the need to protect teaching rights through large-scale protests, and the four laws protecting teaching rights were revised. However, the current educational problems revealed by the Seoicho incident cannot be solved simply by revising the law. An attention must be paid to the individualistic culture of schools, which is a result of the multilayered impact of individualism in modern society on students, parents, and teachers. According to Dewey, machine civilization and the capitalist economic system led to the emergence of “the Great Society”, ushering in a new era of capitalistic individualism in which communities collapsed and each individual’s individuality was weakened. The generation born and raised in the Great Society which is characterized by invisibility live in an environment where it is difficult to develop a social sense. Thus, students cannot recognize the authority of teachers. In addition, the generation that grew up internalizing anxiety in the Great Society have become parents who project the anxiety onto their children and sometimes do parental abuse of teachers. Teachers do not cope well with these changes because the teaching profession has become extremely individualized under the individualism of modern society; thus, teachers feel isolated. To overcome these problems, it is necessary to make the teaching profession and school into a community.
